A Sports Arena Among the Clouds With a Translucent Membrane Roof

When Duvo Engineering, Chennai was presented with an exciting opportunity to develop a sports facility at St. Jude’s school in Nilgiris, 1800 m above mean sea level – the priorities were functionality, safety, durability, climate protection and an aesthetic that blended into the mountainside.

The Flexlight Range of membranes from Serge Ferrari were therefore the ideal roof choice for this sports arena, which spans an area of 50,000 sq ft!
This expansive structure can hold up to four full-sized Basket Ball sporting events at a time, as well as multiple other sporting events, and is covered entirely by a translucent membrane roof (FLEXLIGHT Xtrem TX30, type 2). This lightweight membrane is not just highly durable, it also has excellent natural light transmission capabilities that are essential for any good sports facility.

The roof was innovatively designed to handle & shelter against the heavy rainfall that the region experiences. The structure was also designed to allow for rainwater harvesting, which could then be reused for various consumption purposes within the school.

The execution of the project came with its challenges – given the altitude, rainfall and the structural requirement of the project. However, the completed project proved to be a delight to the management & students of the school.
